FRENCH BRONZE SCULPTURE 'LE MARCHAND D'ARMES TURC' BY G. GUEYTON
France, Circa 1870
This striking 19th-century French patinated bronze sculpture portrays a standing figure known as "Le Marchand d'armes turc" (The Turkish arms merchant). The figure depicts a man wearing a headscarf, most likely a Ghutra or keffiyeh, and he stands holding a flintlock rifle. Adjacent to him is a hookah placed by his right foot, while a flintlock pistol and two yatagan swords rest on a stool near his left foot.
The sculpture is signed by 'G. Gueyton,' a 19th-century French artist. Additionally, it bears an inscription in Arabic reading 'Al Bayaa Al Turki' (The Turkish Merchant). The piece retains its original rich brown patina, adding depth and character to the artwork.
